What to Expect at Your In-Person Tarot Reading

By Madame Molly

You've been curious about Tarot for a while. Maybe a friend had a reading and couldn't stop talking about it. Maybe you've shuffled through a deck on your own and felt like something was there — just out of reach. Or maybe life has handed you a crossroads and you're ready to hear what the universe has to say.

Whatever brought you here, your in-person Tarot reading is closer than you think. And it's probably nothing like what you're imagining.

Let me walk you through exactly what to expect.

Why In-Person Readings Are Different

There's something that happens when you sit across from a reader in a real space. The energy in the room, the physical cards laid out before you, the quiet that settles in when the reading begins — it's a different experience than a phone call or a video session.

In-person readings allow for a deeper energetic connection. You're present. The cards are present. And the conversation that unfolds tends to go places that surprise even the most skeptical visitors.

Where Your Reading Takes Place

Every Friday, I hold readings in the intimate reading room at Strega Shope in Sierra Vista, AZ — a beautiful, magick-filled boutique in the heart of southeastern Arizona.

The space is warm, private, and intentionally designed to help you feel at ease the moment you walk in. Whether you've never set foot in a metaphysical shop or you practically live in one, you'll feel welcome here.

Before You Arrive: What to Do

Book your spot. Friday readings are available from 11am to 4pm, and spots fill up. Booking ahead guarantees your time and lets you arrive without the stress of wondering if there's room.

Come with an open mind — and maybe a question. You don't need to arrive with a specific question, but if there's something weighing on you — a relationship, a career decision, a feeling you can't shake — hold it in mind. The cards often speak most clearly when you bring something real to the table.

Give yourself a few minutes. Don't rush in from a hectic errand run. If you can, take a short walk or sit in your car for a moment before coming inside. A little stillness goes a long way.

What Happens During the Reading

Your 30-minute session begins the moment you sit down. Here's how it typically unfolds:

We Start With a Breath

I'll take a moment to center the energy in the room. This isn't theatrical — it's practical. A grounded reader gives a clearer reading.

You Shuffle the Cards

You'll handle the deck. Your energy goes into the cards. This is one of the reasons in-person readings carry such weight — the cards you draw are genuinely connected to you.

The Spread Is Laid Out

Depending on what you're exploring, I'll use a spread that fits your question or situation. A single card for a focused question. A three-card spread for past, present, and future. A fuller layout for something more complex.

We Read Together

I don't just recite card meanings at you. We explore what comes up together. Sometimes a card lands immediately and you know exactly what it means. Other times, we sit with it and let the meaning emerge. Both are valid. Both are part of the process.

You Ask Questions

This is your reading. If something resonates — or doesn't — say so. If a card brings up something you want to dig into, ask. The 30 minutes belongs to you.

What the Cards Can (and Can't) Do

Tarot doesn't predict a fixed future. What it does is illuminate what's present — the energies at play, the patterns you may not be seeing clearly, the choices in front of you.

Think of it less like a fortune cookie and more like a conversation with a very perceptive friend who happens to speak in symbols.

The cards can:

  • Offer clarity on a confusing situation
  • Reflect back what you already sense but haven't named
  • Open up new ways of looking at a problem
  • Provide comfort, validation, or a gentle challenge

The cards won't:

  • Tell you exactly what to do
  • Override your own judgment and intuition
  • Predict outcomes with certainty

You are always the author of your own story. The cards just help you read it more clearly.

What to Bring

  • Yourself — that's genuinely all you need
  • An open mind — skepticism is fine; hostility to the process tends to close doors
  • A notebook (optional) — some people like to jot down what comes up so they can reflect on it later
  • Cash or card — readings are $40 for 30 minutes

After Your Reading

Give yourself a little time to sit with what came up. Don't immediately jump into a busy afternoon if you can help it. Readings can surface things that need a moment to settle.

Some people journal after a reading. Others go for a walk. Some call a friend. There's no right way — just give the experience room to breathe.

And if something from the reading keeps coming back to you over the next few days, that's worth paying attention to.
